Bottom Line:

Professional sports is a high-stakes game where performance is everything.

To keep athletes competing at their peak, they have access to some of the best healthcare options available, including chiropractic care.

In fact, chiropractors are a staple on the sidelines of nearly every professional sport, helping athletes stay strong, mobile, and ready for action.

Why it Matters:

The days of masking pain with quick-fix shots on the sidelines are long gone.

Covering up pain doesn’t prevent injury—it can actually make things worse. That’s why today’s sports teams and athletes prioritize proactive care over reactive solutions.

Chiropractic care plays a crucial role in keeping athletes in top shape. Nearly every professional sports team has a dedicated team chiropractor to support player performance and recovery.

Consider this: research estimates that 90% of professional and Olympic-class athletes use chiropractic care to improve their performance and reduce injury risk.

By focusing on the root causes of pain, chiropractic care helps athletes recover faster and get back in the game stronger than ever.

Some of the biggest names in sports swear by it:

Jerry Rice: “Most injuries require chiropractic care. It works better for me than anything else.”

Barbara Bunkowsky (LPGA): “Chiropractic keeps me flexible and pain-free so I can perform at my highest level.”

Tom Brady: “Chiropractic just makes you feel better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller.”

Next Steps:

You don’t have to be a professional athlete to benefit from chiropractic care!

Aches, pains, and movement restrictions can slow anyone down, whether you’re a weekend warrior, a dedicated CrossFitter, or a parent chasing after kids.

If you’re looking for a sports rehab chiropractor in [your city / town / neighborhood], we’re here to help you move better, feel better, and perform at your best—on and off the field.

Ready to take the next step? Give us a call today!

The Bottom Line

Many people believe that neck pain is just a part of getting older, but that’s not entirely true. While wear and tear happen over time, how you care for your neck makes a big difference in how you feel.

Natural solutions can help reduce discomfort and improve mobility without relying on medications or invasive treatments.

Yet, many people don’t realize just how effective conservative care can be.

Why It Matters

There are a lot of myths surrounding neck pain relief, but here are three things most people don’t know:

3 Things Most People Don’t Know About Neck Pain Relief

1) Invasive Care Is Not Always Necessary

Many assume surgery or medication is the only option, but research shows that conservative care often provides long-term relief.

2) Movement Is Medicine

Gentle adjustments and targeted exercises help restore motion, reducing tension and discomfort.

3) Neck Pain Doesn’t Have to Be Permanent

Addressing the root cause through lifestyle changes and professional care can lead to lasting relief.

3 Proactive Ways to Care for Your Neck

1) Keep Moving

Daily stretches and strength-building exercises help maintain mobility and keep your joints supported.

2) Adjust Your Workspace

Ergonomic tweaks—like keeping your monitor at eye level—can reduce unnecessary strain on your neck.

3) Choose Anti-Inflammatory Foods

A diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods can help reduce chronic inflammation linked to arthritis pain.

Next Steps

If you’ve been living with neck pain, it’s worth exploring natural options that support your body’s ability to heal and move freely.

We’re here to help you find a personalized approach to relief.

The Natural Neck Pain Solution More People Need to Know About

The Bottom Line

Here’s something worth knowing.

There’s a natural neck pain relief solution that’s not only effective but also safer than medications, injections, and surgery.

In fact, it’s recommended by many healthcare professionals and leading medical organizations as a first-line approach to managing neck pain.

So why isn’t everyone talking about it?

Good question.

Why it Matters

That solution? Chiropractic care.

Chiropractors specialize in optimizing spinal movement, including the function and alignment of the neck.

Gentle adjustments can help restore range of motion and relieve tension, reducing pain naturally.

And get this—

Even if you’ve been diagnosed with a disc herniation, chiropractic care can still be a safe and effective option.

Studies show that nearly 80% of people with a herniated disc in their neck experienced significant relief with spinal adjustments.

3 Things Most People Don’t Know About Natural Neck Pain Relief

1. Invasive Care is Not Recommended First

Medications and surgeries are often not the first recommendation due to potential side effects and risks.

2. Medical Doctors Often Refer Neck Pain Patients to Chiropractors

Trusted healthcare organizations support chiropractic adjustments for neck issues.

3. Studies Support Conservative Care

Recent studies have shown that chiropractic care can provide more relief than steroid injections for disc-related neck pain.

Next Steps

Whether your neck pain is new or something you’ve been dealing with for years, the key to relief is identifying the root cause.

That’s where we come in.

Our team has the experience, tools, and expertise to assess what’s going on and provide personalized care to help you feel your best.

So, if you or someone you know is struggling with neck pain, it’s time to connect with a neck pain specialist in Nutley.

We’d love to help—give us a call today!

How a Natural Lubricant From a Rooster’s Comb Can Help Eliminate Osteoarthritis Knee Pain & Prevent Knee Replacement Surgery Once And For All!

Today I’m writing to help educate about a health condition that will inevitably affect your knees if it hasn’t already and what you can do about it before it’s too late. This condition that I’m referring to is knee osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the knees or simply put “wear & tear” of the knees.

What Is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and affects approximately 27 million people in the United States. Osteoarthritis has an approximate age onset of about 65 years of age but can begin as early as your 20’s or 30’s and that’s usually secondary to an acquired injury or a congenital defect but, both can cause the knee joints to degenerate prematurely. Premature degeneration could also occur with someone being overweight or obese.

NORMAL KNEE VS. OSTEOARTHRITIC KNEE

How Does A Normal Knee Become Osteoarthritic?

In a normal healthy knee the articular cartilage is smooth and slippery which allows the knee joint to glide without friction when bending and straightening of the knee. The articular cartilage tissue covers, cushions, and protects the ends of the bones of the femur and tibia which make up the knee joint. The knee joint also has an invisible sac, known as a bursa, which is filled with synovial fluid, a natural lubricant found in every joint of the body, which promotes the gliding of the knee joints. Over time the synovial fluid dries up and the articular cartilage begins to rub on each other eventually grinding away at bone surfaces. The slow grinding of cartilage leads to pain and inflammation of the knee joint and begins to restrict the range of motion of the knee affecting every day activities like walking and climbing stairs. Many people also become sedentary leading to obesity and depression complicating the situation even more.

Osteoarthritis Knee vs. Rheumatoid Arthritis Knee

Difference Between Osteoarthritis & Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Osteoarthritis can be differentiated from rheumatoid arthritis by the way the joint pain and inflammation is acquired. Osteoarthritis is due to the “mechanical wear and tear” of the joint where rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease causing an inflammatory response of the synovial fluid itself but both conditions cause very similar pain and restrictions. The two conditions can be diagnostically differentiated by x-ray and blood work by your doctor.

Visco-Supplementation – The Secret Sauce…

Today research sheds light on visco-supplementation injections made from the extraction and purification of hyaluronic acid of rooster combs used to lubricate knee joints and serving as a means of decreasing pain and inflammation while preventing knee replacement surgery as best as possible. These FDA approved treatments are safe and effective and have been widely used in the United States for many years now. Most brands of injections are given at a frequency of 1 x per week for a total of 3 to 5 weeks depending on the product being used. According to research the pain relief from the injections can last up to 6 months at which point they may be repeated to attempt to get another 6 months relief. In our office, we have patients staying away from knee replacement surgery for years now thanks to these injections.

Not All Knee Injections Are Created Equal

At Options Rehab the knee pain doctors in Nutley, NJ use a state of the art piece of medical equipment called video-fluoroscopy. This technology allows our doctors to see exactly where the lubricating material needs to be placed for maximum results. The video guidance also allows for the injections to be quick and painless because the doctors can see exactly where they are going and don’t have to poke around guessing whether or not they are within the joint.

Studies have shown that when injecting these lubricants into the knees blindly without the use of any video guidance reduces the accuracy to only 71%, with video-fluoroscopy that accuracy percentage increases into high 90%.

**For demonstration purposes we have added a youtube video link for you to click on and see us action performing an injection.**

Why Do You Need Physical Therapy?

At Options Rehab our Nutley physical therapist will emphasize physical therapy before, during, and after your injection program has finished. Physical therapy should be the first line of defense against developing osteoarthritis of the knees. In fact, most insurance companies now have it written into their policy for coverage that a three-month course of conservative treatment which includes physical therapy, a trial of cortisone, and over the counter NSAID’s, are to be utilized before any viscosupplementation. That’s not a bad thing… Look we get it… we are all busy and have things to do but when it comes to your health you need to prioritize and pay attention to your body so you don’t have to suffer the consequences of possible surgery later.

Physical therapy during viscosupplementation is equivocally important because just simply injecting and lubricating the knee is not addressing the cause but just the symptom. Knees become bad because of loss of function and range of motion. Specifically prescribed exercises that address your knees’ deficits are extremely important in not only the rehabilitation of your knees but also in achieving longevity and avoiding knee replacement at all costs.

Physical therapy after you’ve completed the viscosupplementation program is also very important in the maintenance of your knees. At Options Rehab our therapists will teach you very specific exercises to continue at home while in the office we will be aiming in progressing you up the ladder of function. Some patients say they don’t need physical therapy but I beg to differ, because most patients go to the gym and unfortunately do more harm than good. Please understand that a licensed professional like a Nutley chiropractor or Nutley physical therapist have doctorate level degrees in rehabilitation. This means we live and breathe this stuff every day and we understand the importance of something as easy as getting in and out of a chair or being able to stand up without assistance from a cane or a walker. Our main focus is always on improving the quality of your life so you are able to do the things you enjoy doing well into your golden years.

Why Is Knee Bracing Important For Osteoarthritis?

The doctors and therapists at Options Rehab understand the importance of good knee support. Years of experience treating countless patients with osteoarthritis we have seen a huge improvement with patients who use support braces for their knees. We specifically use a highly patient compliant universal range of motion knee brace built for optimal support and patient comfort. This brace uses a breathable advanced fabric to make it extremely lightweight and breathable. Our patients are advised to use them in and out of the treatment area so they can become comfortable wearing them while building their confidence in doing more difficult exercise while wearing the braces. The straps on the brace also have a rubber tab at each end making it easier for our patients to put the brace on and take the brace off. These braces are not only extremely supportive but they also have a cool design that patients won’t mind wearing.

Is This Knee Program Covered By Insurance?

The first question most patients ask us: “Is this treatment program covered by insurance?”. The short answer is Yes, most insurances, including Medicare, cover the entire program of viscosupplementation, physical therapy, and even the knee braces. We offer a complimentary insurance benefits check for all our patients when they come into our office so they are aware o what is covered and what is not.

The Viscosupplementation program is covered because it is an FDA approved osteoarthritis knee pain treatment in Nutley, NJ. The truth is that insurance companies know it works so well at reducing pain and many times eliminating the need for knee replacement surgery that they allow the program to be done twice per year. That’s correct… every six months if you complete the program and it was successful in alleviating knee pain from osteoarthritis for six months or more then you qualify to repeat the program in six months time again.

Cupping therapy has been long used in traditional Chinese medicine as a way of stimulating and correcting the flow of vital energy (also known as “qi” or “chi”) that can be disturbed in times of illness or injury. Cupping therapy was originally used by acupuncturists in their everyday practice with patients but is now widely used by clinicians such as chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists to help with healing of injuries.

Cupping therapy became popular after seeing high-profile athletes like US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps with round purple marks on their bodies during competition. Many celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Freida Pinto, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian, and Lena Dunham, also reap the rewards and benefits of cupping in their everyday lives.

How does Cupping Therapy Work?
During cupping therapy, a clinician places several inverted cups on the skin over the affected areas of the body. There are different kinds of cups that can be used for cupping such as glass, plastic, or rubber. The cups create a vacuum-like effect and suck or pull the superficial layer of skin of the body away from the deeper soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, or tendons), being treated with main purpose of increasing blood flow to the area. Increased blood flow is the basic underlying principle of why most therapies work in treating patients with musculoskeletal injuries. The enhanced exchange of stagnant blood with new fresh blood flow to the area significantly speeds up healing time. After the cupping therapy, purple or red circle marks can be seen on the skin where the cups were placed and generally clear up in a couple of days.

What is Cupping Therapy Used For?
At Options Rehab cupping is used by chiropractors, physical therapists, and acupuncturists as a complementary therapy for the following conditions:

Headaches or Migraines

Muscular Stress

Tight & Sore Muscles

Neck & Shoulder Pain

Back Pain

Knee Pain

Sports Injuries & Performance

How Much Does Cupping Therapy Cost?
Cupping therapy costs between $45 to $65 per 15 to 30-minute sessions or packages of 12 sessions can be purchased for a 15% discount.

When you are stressed, your body releases hormones such as cortisol that turn on essential functions for your survival, such as higher blood pressure and rapid decision-making, while inhibiting non-essential functions, such as immune function, digestion, and protein synthesis. (This is helpful if you need to handle an acute stressor, but it is also the reason why chronic stress restricts your ability to shed that extra weight around your midsection). Cortisol acts by suppressing insulin secretion, inhibiting glucose uptake into your cells, and disrupting insulin-signaling to muscle tissue. That means that chronic stress directly causes insulin resistance, which then leads to weight loss resistance, increased inflammation, dyslipidemia (elevated blood fat and cholesterol levels) and hypertension. Even exercise, when performed in excess, can leave you chronically stressed with elevated cortisol levels and overtraining does not just happen to athletes. You may be in this category if you are not recovering properly due to under-nourishment of your body therefore leading to poor sleep quality.

Reason #2: Sleep Deprivation

Only about 35% of all Americans get the recommended amount of sleep every night – between seven and nine hours – and many get less than six hours. Sleep deprivation has severe effects on the human body and weakens the immune and nervous systems so much that you become vulnerable to diseases and neurodegeneration.

When it comes to fat loss, research has shown that getting between four to five hours of sleep per night causes insulin resistance and high glycemic variability which can lead to diabetes, appetite cravings, and weight gain, in what would otherwise be a healthy population. Scarier yet is that all it takes to cause this type of damage is a single night of partial sleep.

Sleep deprivation is known to raise cortisol levels, reduce glucose tolerance and increase sympathetic nervous system activity. One study found that, in addition to reducing insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, sleep deprivation produces a neuroendocrine effect by reducing levels of the satiety-inducing hormone leptin and increasing levels of the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin. So not only does sleep deprivation reduce your ability to metabolize glucose, but it also makes you want to consume more sugar and/or vegetable-oil-laden snack food.

Reason #3: Not Moving Enough

The brutal truth is that for most people, sitting for eight hours a day does not expend enough energy to counterbalance breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, despite any exercise performed at the beginning or end of the day. Even in people who exercise, habitual sedentary behavior is associated with metabolic syndrome (MS), increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and premature mortality. When you are regularly sedentary for extended periods, your blood sugar levels go haywire because a low level of physical activity causes unfavorable changes in insulin-signaling, glucose transport, and lipoprotein lipase, the primary enzyme responsible for breaking down fats.

Research also suggests that the time spent being sedentary and the accompanying insulin resistance are partly independent of the amount of time you spend in moderate/vigorous-intensity physical activity. If you spend the majority of your day sitting down or just standing with your knees locked out, that hour you spent at the gym isn’t doing you any metabolic favors. Sitting and even static standing may even place you at risk for heart issues because a hard workout at the end of the day then becomes an attempt to force blood through “kinked” vessels.

It is most likely that a part or all of your cookware leaches metal and/or other toxic elements: Fluoride, aluminum, tin and nickel, primarily. We are so used to associating these things with cookware that we have forgotten how “poisonous” they really are. And non-toxic elements can leech from cookware too like copper and chromium. We might want the convenience of “dishwasher safe” cookware and not want to bother with the care of cast iron and the like. Maybe non–stick cookware is essential for your kitchen survival, and functional performance takes a secondary role?

A little understanding of what your current options are and their value, performance and health impact may help with more informed choices. We can create for ourselves less toxic metal exposure just by choosing better pots and pans. I have metal toxic patients whose exposure we could only associate with cookware. This is getting to be a more common issue. While the medical establishment recognizes the acute toxicity that may occur from high levels of metals/toxins in your body, far more people suffer the adverse effects of low-level, chronic exposure. And cookware may be a main contributing cause. Nickel and other metals and poisons flood the environment and invade your system. Managing how you cook your food each day can give you some control over your toxic load.

High toxic levels lead to Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other brain and neurologic disorders. But clinically we find these toxicities problematic to many systems and overall functioning. Many products are developed for the sake of convenience without concern for human health – Cookware has been no different. Teflon coated, non-stick cookware when heated has proven to be a primary source of a dangerous toxic fluoride derivative, specifically, perfluorinated chemicals (PFOAs). Teflon cookware is probably the worst cookware of all time.

I mention this because so many people still seem to use these pans. A word about copper cookware: It is toxic. Not a good option. When you heat uncoated copper – it leaches! Even copper cookware that is coated can contain and leach nickel. Too much copper in the diet will depress a zinc level which is linked to malfunctioning of the adrenals and the thyroid. And zinc is most essential for immune functioning. So, let’s reap the benefits without the ills! I rated the cookware below based on: least leaching, heat responsiveness and price.

The healthful choices are:

100% ceramic cookware (non–coated) is very safe and functional cookware to use and to avoid these toxic issues. But ceramic, even 100%, does chip and that would be an issue in my kitchen.

Enameled coated, cast iron cookware is virtually heavy metal free on the cooking surface with superior performance and durability. Although, this cookware can be heavy to use on a day-to-day basis, and it is also pricy. An example of this is Le Creuset cookware.

Cast Iron is another healthful option. This cookware minimally leaches iron – a micronutrient that we need. High blood levels due to cookware are rare. Accumulations could be managed by discontinuing use whereas it is much more difficult to rid the body of toxic, heavy metal buildup as the body does not utilize or easily discard these substances.

Stainless steel can leach small amounts of nickel into your food. This has always been a concern of mine. How is that metal mixed and bonded? For a long time, stainless was one of the top “health” pics. The optimal nickel-chromium ratio for the least amount of leaching for stainless steel is 18-10 and the 316 grade. You should be able to see these product details on the labeling when buying. I noticed online they are usually well noted.

My overall best, and most healthful, pick is carbon stainless steel (CSS). These fry pans are made of a strong, durable, 12-gauge carbon steel. The leaching/oxidation factor is far less than stainless. Some brands come pre-seasoned with soy oil. This offers a natural easy-release, low-stick finish that only improves with use and seasoning. You’ll be cooking healthier by limiting the overall amount of added oils needed, too. They have been a staple in most commercial kitchens worldwide but are just being utilized in American home kitchens more lately. These metal pans of course, do not chip. There is no type of surface covering them to damage and peel. Some brands producing thinner pans have been known to warp. Buy smart! Examples of good brands are:

Matfer Bourgeat, a family owned, French business established in the 19th century. They sell CSS pans globally and with a commitment to sustainability. All of their manufacturing sites are ISO – environmentally certified and target minimal carbon footprints. And of course, I rated them for overall performance too – A solid choice for CSS.

And my #1 pic for a CSS brand is, Lodge. They are well known for their cast iron products but their carbon pans are getting great reviews. The only con for some might be that this cookware, and most all CSS, is not stainless steel shiny and they do not come in a wide variety of matching sets. They have a great weighty feel but are not near as heavy as cast iron. You buy for instance, a crepe pan, for its specific use. And of course, there are pans in all sizes. They are all about their function! This choice is based on manufacturer’s quality, superior price point and these pans are made in the good old U.S. of A. (See: Lodge.com). And there are many informative YouTube videos for their use and care.

However, this injury can be sustained any time a person experiences a rapid forward and backward motion of the neck as in a car accident. It can result in acute neck pain and restricted neck range of motion. Chiropractic care can help treat the symptoms of whiplash and provide a variety of non-surgical options that will allow you to obtain relief from your pain and discomfort.

Treating Whiplash Through Chiropractic Care

When you visit a chiropractor, your spine will be evaluated as a whole, even if you are only experiencing neck pain. Why is the entire spine examined? Despite the fact that you might only be experiencing pain in your neck, other regions of the spine might also be affected without your knowledge. Your chiropractor will examine and identify any areas of restricted joint motion, intervertebral disc injury, muscle spasms, and ligamentous injuries. Through touch, your chiropractor will feel for tenderness, tightness, and how well your spinal joints move.

Additionally, he or she will check how well you are able to walk and make note of your posture and spinal alignment. This will help your chiropractor understand the biomechanics of your body and how your spine works. It is possible that X-rays and an MRI of your spine will be ordered to look for any degenerative changes that might have existed prior to your injury.

Different Types of Whiplash Treatments

The treatment plan your chiropractor recommends to you will depend on the severity of your injury. Generally, the most common technique used is called spinal manipulation. There are many different spinal manipulation techniques that are used to treat whiplash:

Flexion-distraction: This is a hands-on method that involves gentle spinal manipulation to treat herniated discs with or without arm pain. Your chiropractor will use a slow pumping action on your disc rather than applying direct force to your spine.

Instrument-assisted manipulation: This type of technique uses a specialized handheld instrument, which your chiropractor will apply without thrusting force to the spine. It is often used for elderly patients who have degenerative joint conditions.

Specific spinal manipulation: Your chiropractor will identify spinal joints that are restricted or exhibit abnormal motion and use a gentle thrusting motion to stretch the soft tissue and stimulate the nervous system in order to restore normal motion to the spine.

Your chiropractor might also use manual therapy to treat injured soft tissues, such as ligaments and muscles. Different types of manual therapy include instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy, manual joint stretching and resistance techniques, therapeutic massage, and trigger joint therapy.

An intervertebral disc is a circular piece of cushioning tissue that rests between adjacent vertebrae in the spine. Each individual disc has a tough cartilage outer layer that covers a soft, jelly-like center. Overtime, these discs start to naturally degenerate with age, and the cartilage may stiffen due to dehydration.

A herniated disc, also known as a “ruptured” or “slipped” disc, is when the outer layer of cartilage cracks and exposes the soft inner cartilage. As the inner cartilage protrudes from the disc, it may cause irritation or painful inflammation to the nerve root. Herniated discs are commonly caused by wear and tear or spinal trauma.

Alternatively, when a disc is damaged by an injury, poor posture, or inactivity, it may bulge and push back into one side of the spinal canal. This can cause extreme pain and even numbness in your fingers or arms.

If you’re suffering from a herniated or bulging disc, it’s important to seek medical assistance and explore your non-surgical options with a chiropractor or physical therapist. You may be surprised at how efficiently spinal decompression therapy can treat your symptoms and alleviate your pain!

Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical back treatment option that uses an FDA-approved machine to gently stretch the spine. A chiropractor or physical therapist can use this machine to produce negative pressure that may retract a patient’s bulging or herniated discs, allowing them to heal naturally. This treatment plan reportedly reduces chronic back pain by 85%.

The Process of Spinal Decompression

During your therapy session, a chiropractor or physical therapist fixes a harness around your pelvis and trunk. Depending on their suggestion, you can lie face down or face up on the table. Your chiropractor or physical therapist will operate the computer based on your specific needs and stretch your spine accordingly. Therapy sessions are typically 30 minutes long and the entire treatment program may last 1 to 3 months depending on the severity of the conditions.

Schedule an Appointment with a Spinal Decompression Expert

We use the Antalgic-Trak®, which is considered the most advanced Spinal Decompression machine currently on the market, to precisely target and treat a patient’s pain location.
